FBISE Announces New Exam Pattern for Five Subjects in 2026

FBISE Announces New Exam Pattern for Five Subjects in 2026

The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) has introduced a revised examination pattern for five major science and technology subjects at the SSC and HSSC levels.

The new pattern is particularly important for HSSC-I students because it will be introduced from the Second Annual Examination 2026. Under the revised structure, students will face a paper containing an equal share of MCQs and descriptive questions.

The change is part of the board’s implementation of the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024, which is based on a total of 1,200 marks.

Five Subjects Included in the New Pattern

The revised assessment structure will initially cover five subjects. These include:

  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Computer Science

For these subjects, the examination paper will be divided into two major components. 50% of the paper will consist of multiple-choice questions, while the remaining 50% will contain descriptive questions.

This means students will need to prepare for both objective and written portions instead of depending mainly on one type of question.

New Pattern Starts From 2nd Annual Examination 2026

The first phase of the new assessment system will begin with the SSC-I and HSSC-I Second Annual Examination 2026.

However, the revised pattern is aimed at candidates who are appearing for the first time under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024. Students should therefore check their candidate category before assuming that the new paper format applies to them.

Fresh candidates and eligible first-time candidates will follow the revised structure. Candidates who cancelled their HSSC-I result and are appearing again under the applicable category will also follow the new pattern.

On the other hand, candidates appearing as reappearing students may continue under the existing paper pattern, depending on their examination category.

What Happens in First Annual Examination 2027?

The second phase is scheduled for the First Annual Examination 2027.

FBISE will apply the revised pattern to SSC-I and HSSC-I students appearing under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024.

Students who appeared in the Second Annual Examination 2026 under the new system will also continue with the revised pattern when they reach SSC-II or HSSC-II in the First Annual Examination 2027.

This phased approach is intended to gradually move students from the old assessment system to the new examination structure.

Full Implementation Planned for 2028

The final phase is expected to begin with the First Annual Examination 2028.

At this stage, the revised pattern will also cover SSC-II and HSSC-II students who previously appeared in their first-year examination under the new system.

Therefore, the transition will take place over several examination sessions rather than changing the complete system at once.

FBISE Prepares Model Papers and Assessment Frameworks

To help students and teachers understand the revised assessment method, FBISE has prepared supporting material for the five subjects.

The material includes Assessment Frameworks, Model Question Papers, SLO Alignment Charts and Tables of Specifications.

These resources can help students understand the expected question style, learning outcomes and distribution of questions.

Students preparing for the new HSSC-I examination should study their syllabus carefully and practice both MCQs and descriptive questions.

What HSSC-I Students Should Do Now

Students appearing under the new pattern should avoid preparing only through textbook questions or MCQs.

A better approach is to divide preparation between concept-based objective questions, short answers, detailed questions, numerical problems and application-based questions, according to the requirements of each subject.

The new 50-50 structure means that performance in both sections can have a significant impact on the final paper score.

Students should also use the official FBISE model papers and assessment documents to become familiar with the revised examination format before appearing in the examination.
